This book was not what I expected it to be, it was much better than that. I expected that this would be a book full of family legacies, secrets and the type of book that would put the characters before the rest of the story. In some ways, that was true, but the story that emerged was an unforgettable one with rich dialogue and a well described setting. The author has done a fabulous job of describing what it was like to parent a child with a spectrum disorder before there was a scientific basis for diagnosis. The relationship between mother and child in this novel is the backbone for the story and was handled incredibly well.
The characters are realistic and each have their own personality quirks, and ways of doing things, rather than just being cookie cutter types. I appreciated the amount of effort the author put into making this an interesting and enjoyable read and look forward to further works from Melanie Dobson.

As a mother of a child "on the spectrum" this story touched my heart. It's surprises keep you turning pages until the very end. Beautifully done.
Interesting format going back and forth from past to present throughout the whole story. After reading the story, I was interested in the author's note about why she portrayed Libby as she did - a great job of developing this character and her "unusual behaviors".
This was my first book by this author, I liked it very much. I found it a little difficult to follow the here and now time shift. It was easy when the year was labeled. Is that Libby on the cover, red hair, in her own world? Elizabeth
I really enjoyed this book! I love mystery and secrets involved with families. It was a great read from start to finish an I read it in 2 evenings because I couldn't put it down. A happy ending. You could keep up with the story even though it went from past to present. If you decide to read it I'm sure you won't be sorry.
Shadows of Ladenbrook is just WONDERFUL! While camping, I actually finished it by lantern light because I didn't want to put it down! I could completely relate to Maggie and Libby. My son's autism was not diagnosed until he was in his twenties. We struggled for years, not understanding why he was so "different". We also experienced the rejection from teachers and unkindness from kids. I am so grateful for the attention autism is receiving now and how therapy has improved. Thank you for your story about how gifted these kids can be.
For the second year in a row, Melanie Dobson has penned my absolute favorite novel of the year. In 2014, Chateau of Secrets blew me away, and in 2015, Shadows of Ladenbrooke Manor did the same. Maggie, Walter, Libby, and Heather are fascinating characters, and the intricate web of secrets is slowly unraveled. With writing as lovely as Libby’s butterfly paintings, I was swept into the world of English gardens and intertwined families. Do not miss this novel, my friends!
All throughout Shadows of Ladenbrooke Manor I kept longing for restored relationships of one kind or another, whether it was mother-daughter, husband-wife or even the impossible reconnection of a lost love, and that longing created a poignant tension that lingered throughout the entire story. My heart hurt for Libby, for Maggie, for Heather as they each suffered through various circumstances, some of their own making, most not. The ending was moving and satisfying but a touch melancholy with the gentle reminder that rifts should be mended before they cannot. The mystery itself seemed secondary to the characters, and I found myself completely surprised by its resolution.
A lovely book, and one I highly recommend.
I just finished reading Shadows of Ladenbrooke Manor last night. Loved it. I completely fell in love with Libby and grew a deeper appreciation for my friends that have been entrusted with and blessed to have children on the autism spectrum. I have a particular affinity to fairies and Libby seemed all about that. Melanie's writing is so beautifully creative and descriptive of the gardens - the dawn and twilight, the dew and midnight, the hues associated with each shadow and new light. I could just imagine fairies riding on the butterflies and peeking out from under the dew-laden foliage in the gardens as Libby twirled and danced in the moonlight.
The way the characters lives were woven together was beautiful and reflective of some of the complexities that families face in light of our choices. Some reviews did not seem to appreciate the truth behind the multi-generational mistakes by the women in this novel - (one reviewer wrote "I would consider this a Christian, historical fiction book; however the main characters all dealt with moral issues so I wouldn't recommend this book to young adults." My comment on that comment would be "As if Christians never deal with moral issues?! Ah...but for God's amazing grace and redemptive power! That's is part of what this story reflects! And great lessons can be learned there.) So, while that was a sad aspect of the story, I believe it was a truth reflective of how our choices can effect our generations...and God's redemptive power to break those generational strongholds. I was encouraged that by the 4th generation, Ella was making the better choices. And that, is indeed, how it can happen when one generation makes the choice to break the cycle and change history for our children and their children - when we step out in truth, take accountability and embrace God's redemptive grace!
This story made me long to go to England!
