I am very surprised at the reviews of Reed's Promise. I was really looking forward to reading this after having read all his other books. (which I really enjoyed) I thought that this was very poorly written. To me it didn't even seem like the same author or maybe was his first book which was passed up by publishers then brought back later as a new book. The dialog was hooky and over written. Many times where was repeat dialog such as, Ullman "You'll have to talk to your cousin through a door". Reed. "Through a door?" Ullman, "Yes, through a door". This type of dialog was all through the book. And the over writing? An example was Mrs Ullman who never had trouble going to sleep because of her fantasies about being rich. Then it goes on about 3 or 4 pages explaining about her fantasies. This book should have been about 100 pages less then it was. Many things were WAY drawn out. I gave his last book, New Lots, 5 stars. I was very disappointed in this one. Still, I do wonder what happened to him. If he came out with a new book I'd give it a try.Tags : Reed's Promise [John Clarkson] on Amazon.com. *FREE* shipping on qualifying offers. <div>Bill Reed has not seen or spoken to his cousin John, an adult suffering from Down Syndrome, for four years,John Clarkson,Reed's Promise,Forge Books,081256538X,1001224557,Thrillers - General,Fiction,Fiction - Mystery Detective,Fiction Mystery & Detective General,Fiction Thrillers General,Mystery & Detective - General

Characters that don't fit the usual mode and all too human at that, propel a different kind of action novel. Judicious editing might have helped, but this is a page turner none the less. I'll look for his other stuff.
Active man loses leg in motorcycle accident. During his convalescence, (and while he is feeling sorry for himself), he recieves a troubling communication from his cousin. Retarded, forty, and institutionalized, the cousin has worse problems than the pain of prosthesis. Thrilling, insightful, a newly handicapped man's struggle to overcome the evil in a closed world that has no compassion or respect for differences.
Bill Reed, a recent leg amputee, has to abandon the self-indulgent life he has fashioned to accommodate his disability and try to unravel the reason his cousin, a Down's syndrome victim is being mistreated in the private institution where he has resided for a number of years. In so doing, Reed learns to triumph over his disability in order to save his cousin's life. This is a fast-paced and engaging yarn, although the skulduggery seems based on a rather doubtful premise. The writing is good, and action outweighs introspection by a good deal.
I picked this book up for a dollar at a thrift shop, having no idea what it was really about or who the author was. From the first page pretty much onward, I was captured, though the book veers between being painfully realistic and caricature over-the-top. It was nice that the hero, Reed, despite being a real kick ass tough guy, actually experiences real fear and vulnerability at times. I also liked the portrayal of John Boyd, Reed's Down Syndrome cousin, who had subtle moments of strength, despite his severe disabilities. The bad guys are too uniformly nefarious to be believed, as is their evil master plan, though it does make for a guilty-pleasure type of read to see them get their comeuppance. Perhaps a bit more realistic plot and some shades of grey in the bad guys would have made this fun read a great read. Definitely action packed and a hero that a guy's guy will love.
good book - different
I'm giving 4 stars instead of 5 because of too much profanity, otherwise, it's a good thriller till the end. Bad guys were giving Bill Reed a lot of run around. Bad guys were bully around Reed's cousin, Johnny Boy (with Down's Syndrome) for no reason and it will make you feel like Johnny Boy is one of your own and wanting to protect him from bad people.
I knew nothing about the author or the book but began to read it since my wife knew the author and suggested I might like it. I could not put it down. It was 'EASY" reading, and though it took a little while to "set the table", I never found it boring and it kept my curiosity throughout. The protagonist turned out to be quite a character and his surrounding cast of helpers were "right up there with him". I look forward to reading some of his other works and will start with "New Lots"!
